Virginia state Sen. Creigh Deeds made sure his son, Gus, is remembered more for his living than his dying. This brilliant artist and musician took his own life after injuring his father in 2013. In a National Press Club speech, Deeds said the mental health issue is much bigger than any one person’s experience. He is speaking out to:
- Desigmatize mental illness and bring about equity in treatment
- Change the laws so it is less likely that others experience such heartbreak
